TMJ treatment

We shed light in the mistery area of TMJ Treatment

Have you been popping sinus medication or migraine pills for your chronic headaches and getting no relief? Have your ears been hurting even though your physician has found no sign of an infection? If you’ve had mystery symptoms with no discernible cause, you may need to look no further than your jaw. A condition known as TMJ dysfunction could be the cause of your discomfort.

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

The temporomandibular joint, commonly known as TMJ, is the joint that connects the mandible, or lower jaw, to the skull. TMJ dysfunction occurs when this joint becomes inflamed. This condition is also called TMJ disorder, TMJ syndrome, and craniomandibular dysfunction. If you are experiencing this condition it’s important to see a dentist familiar with TMJ treatment.

What are the Symptoms?

When the temporomandibular joints are inflamed or out of place, it can cause a variety of symptoms, some of which you may not think connect to your jaw problem. Symptoms can include the following:

  • Jaw pain
  • Clicking or popping of your jaw
  • Inability to open your mouth fully
  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Grinding or clenching of your teeth
  • Pain in the neck, shoulder, or back

What Treatments are Available?

The most common first course of action is to fit you with a splint or mouthguard that holds your jaw in the proper position and prevents you from grinding your teeth. Dr. Denes can also suggest lifestyle changes that can alleviate any strain you may be putting on the joints, such as stopping gum chewing and eliminating stress so that you do not clench your teeth at night. However, some problems are related to structural misalignments of the jaw and may need orthodontic or other therapies.

Drs. Alex Denes and Claudia Denes will perform a complete evaluation of your TMJ dysfunction and make the appropriate treatment recommendations.
