Teaching children anything can be difficult at times, especially if what you’re teaching involves staying still for minutes on end and thoroughly cleaning their teeth. As challenging as it may be, however, teaching your children the proper basic tenets of dental hygiene is critical to the lifelong health of their smiles. Fresno family dentists, Dr. Alex Denes and Dr. Claudia Denes, understand the importance and challenges of instilling good dental habits in your children. To help facilitate the process, they offer these tips for making the routine more enjoyable for your children, and hopefully easier to teach.
Keep Your Child Excited About Clean Teeth
- Many children rebel against the idea of bedtime as vigorously as they do the routine of brushing their teeth. Instead of brushing before bed, make your child brush their teeth after dinner, or before a favorite television show. If brushing their teeth is the only thing between your children and their show, they will be more eager to complete the task.
- The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth for at least two to three minutes at a time. Coincidentally, this is also the average length of most popular songs. Play one of your children’s favorite song while they brush their teeth to make it more interesting, as well as ensure that they’re brushing for an adequate amount of time.
- An electric toothbrush is understandably more interesting to a child than a molded piece of plastic with bristles attached to one end. Allowing them to use an electric one can make the process more enjoyable.
